RECREATION LEADER III - TEEN CENTER PROGRAMS

Provide programming activities and mentorship for teens at the Santa Cruz Teen Center located at 125 Laurel Street.

POSITION AVAILABLE: Recreation Leader III
REPORTS TO: Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Assistant/Teen Center Coordinator
SUPERVISES: Provides lead direction to program participants, volunteers and Rec. Leader I and II
PROGRAM DATES: Year Round
HOURS: up to 15 hours/week
SHIFTS: Shifts vary depending upon facility hours and special programs
WAGE: $12.64 per hour

BASIC FUNCTION: Plans, organizes, implements, and supervises activities, programs, and special events under supervision at the Teen Center located at 125 Laurel Street. Must maintain flexibility, as hours of operation for the Teen Center range from Tuesday thru Thursday 2:00 - 8:00 pm, and Friday/Saturday 2:00 - 10:00 pm in addition to other specially scheduled programs.

TYPICAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Plans, organizes, and implements daily activities.
  • Designs and facilitates at least one drop-in activity each month.
  • Coordinates facility and activities with program partners.
  • Attends and assists in all staff meetings.
  • Prepares documents such as letters, accident reports, discipline documentation, daily log, membership database, etc.
  • Acts as cashier and front desk reception.
  • Fields public questions regarding programs and facility.
  • Provides lead supervision for Recreation Leader II's, teen leaders, volunteer staff and program participants.
  • Opens and closes facility.
  • Supervises the maintenance of equipment, supplies and facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge of recreation programs, services and appropriate activities for teens; strong interest in working with teens and young adults.
  • Experience and/or combined educational training leading teen programs, activities or services in either a traditional or non-traditional recreation setting.
  • Interact effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals (teens, young adults, parent, business community).
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Ability to work with teens & co-workers from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to enforce and explain facility and program guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work irregular hours especially evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Strong communication skills: ability to understand and give verbal and written instructions.
  • Maintain neat appearance; wear program uniform and closed toed shoes.
  • Independently initiate and complete work activities.
  • Effectively motivate and supervise a number of teens at a time.

    UPON HIRE & BEFORE STARTING WORK

  • Proof of negative tuberculosis test or clear chest X-ray results must be presented.
  • Fingerprinting of all employees is required before hire.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. and two (2) years experience (paid or unpaid) leading teen activities.
  • Recreation, P.E. or Education/Child Development course work desired.

    REQUIRED LICENSES/TRAINING:
  • Possession and maintenance of current certification in First Aid and CPR prior to starting work.
  • Possession of valid California's drivers license.

    OTHER HELPFUL SKILLS (not required):

  • Bilingual/Bi-Cultural strongly desired.
  • Experience or knowledge of substance abuse issues (i.e. drugs and alcohol).
  • Experience or knowledge of violence prevention issues in the youth community.
  • Familiarity with local community organizations and resources.
